Robert de Haan secures pole position for Monaco season highlight

Dutchman Robert de Haan of BWT Lechner Racing and Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus share the front grid row for the second round of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. Oeverhaus, the current championship leader from Germany, competes for Proton Huber Competition.

Last weekend in Imola, Italy, both drivers from the BWT Lechner Racing team were out of the race already on the opening lap after becoming entangled in an accident caused by another competitor. This Sunday, however, Robert de Haan will tackle the second round of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Monaco from pole position, while his teammate Marvin Klein starts from third on the grid. ‟A strong performance from the team after the drama in Imola – we’re back where we belong!” said a delighted De Haan. The 18-year-old Dutchman is the reigning rookie champion of the international one-make cup, which features the 375 kW (510 PS) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Only Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus managed to separate BWT Lechner Racing’s duo in qualifying. Driving for Proton Huber Competition, the young German came within just 55-thousandths of a second of Robert de Haan’s pole-setting time. Posting the fourth-fastest qualifying time, Keagan Masters of the Ombra Racing team lines up behind Oeverhaus for the 17-lap sprint. The South African is determined to repeat his podium finish from exactly one year ago on the streets of Monte-Carlo.

Qualifying with interruptions

The 30-minute qualifying session was interrupted three times to allow marshals to safely salvage stranded Cup 911 cars following driver errors. ‟That’s exactly what I expected,” said Robert de Haan. ‟And that’s also why I concentrated on attempting a flying lap as early as possible on my second set of tyres.” His teammate Marvin Klein was among those who had to abandon a potential pole-setting lap due to a red flag. ‟But after the retirement at Imola, the most important thing for me is to score as many points as possible this time,” he added. Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus experienced a session of mixed fortunes: ‟After one red flag, I was the first to leave the pit lane, immediately got a clear lap, and was able to achieve the second-best time. After the next interruption, I was at the very back of the queue. So of course, there was no chance of improving.”

The third grid row is locked out by the second Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti of France, representing Schumacher CLRT, and Dutchman Huub van Eijndhoven from the GP Elite outfit. His fellow countryman Jaap van Lagen, driving for Proton Huber Competition and a former Monaco winner from exactly ten years ago, was left disappointed with a qualifying result outside the top ten. Dirk Schouten, a Supercup newcomer from the Netherlands, impressed by securing eighth place as the fastest rookie. He competea in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entered by Dinamic Motorsport.

Talk with Formula 1 legends Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard

As part of the Monte Carlo race weekend, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup hosted a special ‟Legend Talk” featuring ex-Formula 1 stars Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard. Häkkinen holds a unique place in Supercup history: The eventual double world champion (1998 and 1999) remains the only VIP guest driver to have claimed victory twice in the Supercup – first in Monaco and later at the Hungaroring near Budapest, both in 1993.

‟Before my guest appearance in Monaco, I had never driven a 911 – not even on the road,” Häkkinen recalled during the panel chat. ‟Fortunately, the Cup car used in the 1993 season was relatively straightforward from a technical standpoint. The Porsche engineers and mechanics supported me immensely. With their help, I was immediately on the pace of the fastest drivers – and I was right up the front in qualifying.”
